Bionic Skin Dressing Speeds Healing of Infected Wounds
07/05/2025 • by The RAM Institute
Researchers have developed a bioinspired wound dressing that combines passive cooling with light-activated antibacterial activity to accelerate the healing of infected wounds.
Published in Nano-Micro Letters, the dressing achieved antibacterial efficacy of more than 97% against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Under sunlight, it also reduced the local wound temperature by around 4°C, helping to create a more favourable environment for healing while promoting tissue regeneration in preclinical models.
The researchers say the dressing is designed to mimic the protective functions of natural skin by combining cooling, antibacterial activity and regenerative support in a single material. They believe the technology could offer a promising new approach for the treatment of infected and chronic wounds.
