Study Uncovers New Mechanism Behind Tissue Regeneration
07/05/2025 • by The RAM Institute
Researchers from the Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research have identified a mechanism that helps tissues rebuild their structure following injury.
Published in Cell, the study found that regenerating tissues temporarily amplify small differences between neighbouring cells, allowing organised tissue patterns to re-form.
The study found that temporary differences in how neighbouring cells respond to injury help determine their role in regeneration. These differences are then reinforced through cell signalling, allowing healthy tissue architecture to be re-established.
The researchers believe similar mechanisms may operate across other tissues, providing new insights for regenerative medicine and tissue engineering.
